Skogskyrkogården (The Woodlands Cemetery)

Skogskyrkogården is located in Enskede, in the souteastern part of Stockholm. With its 100.000 graves Skogskyrkogården is the largest cemetery in Sweden. An architectural competition for a new cemetery was announced in 1914. The winning proposal was made by the young architects Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz. Construction began in 1917and the first part was inagurated in 1920. Development continued until 1940, when some of Gunnar Asplunds last designs, such as the monument hall, was constructed. The crematorium with the monument hall was inagurated in 1940, Gunnar Asplund died the same year and was cremated there and buired nearby. Skogskyrkogården is regarded as one of the most important creations of modern architecture. It represents the move from national romantic style to modernism. In 1994 Skogskyrkogården was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
