Hökarängen is situated south of the city of Stockholm. The planning of Hökarängen started with a planning competition for the area in 1939- 43. The area was planned by the
neighbourhood approach, which means that the houses where laid out in the natu
re surrounding the centre where shops, restaurants, other service and the metro station wher
e to be found. The architecture is typical Swedish post-war style,
with the plaster facades, earthy colours, and the iron details on the balcony rails. The buildings are gently placed in the nature and there position often creates yards. In the yards the nature is in many
cases well preserved and
there is a lot of sculptures, fountains and walls in them.
In the centre of Hökarängen Sweden’s first pedestrian street was built, which was revolutionary in the 1950´s. The buildings in this area have brighter facades in comparisons to the surrounding buildings. Since a couple of years the neon signs in the
centre has been restored and this gives a very strong feeling of the 50´s. Hökarängen centre was designed by the Swedish architect David Helldén.
