It stands on the eastern tip of Kungsholmen island, next to Riddarfjärden's northern shore and facing the islands of Riddarholmen and Södermalm.
It houses offices and conference rooms as well as ceremonial halls, and the luxury restaurant Stadshuskällaren.

Its 106 metres high tower makes it a great landmark of the city. The City Hall was designed by Ragnar Ostberg and was come into use on Midsummer's Eve in 1923.
The tower of the building is open in the summer, offering a fantastic view of Stockholm. A lift goes half-way up the tower, where there is a museum. The shop in the City Hall has a variety of souvenirs.
